FEBRUARY 18, 2012
This has been a wonderful week here in Harlingen, TX but we are leaving out of here after our month's stay here with friends and family. We are headed for SanAntonio for a couple of days then to dealership where we bought the new RV for some minor repairs and questions. From there, we will go to Sun City (outside of Phoenix) Arizona for a visit with Tom's brother Bob. We will probably spend about a week there.

While visiting here in Harlingen, TX we were fortunate to be able to spend some time with Tom's Cousins, Marcia and Terry Hood. They spend winters about 45 minutes west of here. One day we went to see them at their coach which is an older "Bounder" but was beautiful and had some great features which I wish more new coaches had in them. They have basically lived in it for years and enjoy every minute. Yesterday they came to visit us and we had a great time "catching up". We have resolved to meet up with the "Cairns Kids" in Estes Park Colorado in late June. That should be a blast!
After lunch, we took them to see the Iwo Jima memorial near the Harlingen airport. It is the original plaster one that the famous bronze one was cast. (The military memorial statue outside the walls of the Arlington National Cemetery and next to the Netherlands Carillon, in Arlington, Virginia. The memorial is dedicated to all personnel of the United States Marine Corps who have died in the defense of their country since 1775. The design of the massive sculpture by Felix de Weldon was based on the iconic photo Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima, taken during the Battle of Iwo Jima by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal. Harlon is buried beside the Iwo Jima Monument in Harlingen, Texas) We are always awe struck by it.

VALENTINE'S DAY 2012
It was lovely sitting on the patio with friends for Valentines Day this year. Edna cooked the best prime rib that I have ever eaten and we had all the trimmings including baked potatoes and fresh green beans. As if that wasn't enough, Carolyn brought out ChocoVine (choc. wine) and fresh strawberries! YUMMMM Later we indulged even further with wonderful Key Lime Pie which Edna made with Gluten Free Graham Cracker Crust. Needless to say, we fell asleep early that evening. Wish everyone could have such a great evening and much love.

HAPPY HOURS
Every Thursday afternoon from 3-6 pm there is music and fun at happy hour here in Park Place RV Park. These photos are of cousins, Edna & Larry Hockett, Donna & Tom Gibbens, Carolyn & Dell Kaufman. The last photo includes one of our musicians, Dick Anderson. He and his brother, play and sing for us during Happy Hour. "Red Solo Cup" is one of our many favorite songs to sing along to. There is dancing and line dancing too. It's a fun time.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 10
There is always a dance somewhere in the "Valley". Friday we joined a large group at one of these dances. The music was great! It was all created by a very talented young man, Diago. He used an electric keyboard which he could squeeze out the sounds of any band and he sang to all of them. We had everything from Glen Miller, to Rock, Polka, Country and beyond. He was amazing and we all enjoyed the evening. Edna had Larry sneek up and talk to Diago, who later had me stand while he and everyone else sang "Happy Birthday" to me. It was fun but embarrassing.

February 7 - Pig Roast
FEBRUARY 7 - PIG ROAST
This afternoon we had a "Pig Roast" in the RV Park. Tickets were sold for $5 each and you brought a side dish in one of three catagories. They sold 650 tickets! The weather was very cloudy (around 60 degrees) with chances of showers but fun was still had by all. They closed a section of street for games and had live music going on in the hall all afternoon. The evening culminated with dinner of delicious pork and a huge array of side dishes and desserts. It was amazing how quickly and efficiently they put that many people through the line. Everyone was seated and they would send one table at a time to the line, similar to dismissing people from a wedding ceremony. Here are some photos from the games. Two men had a drag race on their motorized coolers. That drew a good crowd and cheers. One of the unusual things was blowing huge bubbles. I just knew someone was going to get hit up side the head by one but didn't see that. They had lots of other things to play also. Hope you enjoy the photos.

Sat. Evening 2-4
Well one never knows what lies ahead. About 12:30, Larry and Edna called and said we should enjoy the last warm day this week so we went into town. The first Sat. of each month, they close one of the downtown streets and it is filled with vendors and music. There was everything from antiques to garage sale type stuff to craftsmen to Kettle Corn and other munchies. Various musicians were playing and a band played at one intersection. I wish Raytown would do this.
After that we decided to go to South Padre Island. They were having a Rodeo and a kite flying festival. The weather was sunny and warm (84 degrees at that time). By the time we got there, it was partly cloudy. Of course, we were hungry so we went to Dirty Al's for fried shrimp. The crowd was huge and had to wait a while but everyone felt it was worth it. From there we went to see the kites but it was getting late and most of them were gone. Larry said that during the day we would have seen lots of huge kites dancing in the sky to music blaring on the beach. We did get to see one guy with a motorized beach mobile fly his kite as he went down the beach. Lots of fun. The sea gulls were thick in the air. They are amazing how they can float on the air.
By the time we returned to Harlingen, it was pouring rain and the temperature had dropped to 62 degrees. It is expected to be a cold and dreary week. Maybe I will get my Christmas Tree Skirt finished this week that I started when Tom had his back surgery. Tomorrow is Super Bowl so we are going to the Kaufman's and us ladies are going to make jewelry while the guys watch the game. We are listening to KU MU ball game tonight and at the moment, it doesn't look good for MU but there is always hope.
